RE: URGENT ALERT!!!

Hi Folks!

The Clinton/Gore administration's attempt to ban snowmobiles from our
national parks is being challenged this week in Washington. As I write
this, there is a bipartisan movement to pass legislation to protect
snowmobilers' access to public lands. After getting input from the Clinton
Administration, this week Senators Daschle (D-SD), Thomas (R-WY) and
Stevens (AK) introduced a provision to a bill that would prevent the
proposed ban and protect your right to ride the same trails millions of
cars, trucks and RVs use during the summertime.

TAKE ACTION TODAY!!! Please contact the following people immediately and
tell them to support the provision to protect your right to ride in national
parks.

Please distribute this alert on to as many of your contacts as possible
TODAY. We can make an impact on this legislation, but we need to act now.

Make time RIGHT NOW to contact the following legislators, and feel free to
copy and paste the letter provided below!

SAMPLE LETTER:

Dear (Name),
I am writing to ask you to support legislation that would protect
snowmobilers' right to ride in our national parks.
The amendment created by a bipartisan group of Senators, including
Senators Tom Daschle (D-SD), Craig Thomas (R-WY) and Ted Stevens (R-AK),
with input from the Clinton Administration, gives snowmobilers equal
access to the same snow-covered roads in national parks that millions of
cars, trucks and RVs use during the summertime.
Snowmobiles have always met all national park air quality and sound level
standards. The National Park Service is trying to justify the ban based
on data gathered a decade ago using obsolete vehicles. In fact,
snowmobile manufacturers have taken the lead in developing successive
generations of cleaner, quieter machines. Currently, the industry is
working with the EPA to develop emissions standards.
The American public is against a snowmobile ban by a wide margin.
According to a poll by SWR Research, 78 percent of Americans believe
snowmobiles should be allowed in national parks. Only 11 percent support
the Park Service's proposal to ban snowmobiles. A majority says the ban
is another example of federal overreach. Another recent poll in USA
Weekend also found that nearly 80 percent of Americans favor snowmobile
access in national parks.
A snowmobile ban would cost millions of dollars and thousands of jobs in
communities around the parks. It will have a dramatic impact on tour
operators, motels, restaurants, service stations, and rental and repair
shops.
My fellow four million snowmobilers and I will not be ignored. We plan to
vote on November 7 and every election following. We'll remember who stood
up and said the national parks are intended for everyone.
I'm asking for your support.
Sincerely,

(Your Name and Address)

Please find pasted below the National Parks and Conservation Association's
alert calling anti-snowmobile folks to action! We must take action to
counter this move, which is guaranteed to generate lots of pressure on the
folks in Washington.

NPCA ALERT!
In the final moments of the congressional session, Senate Republicans who
favor virtually unrestricted snowmobile recreation in our national parks are
pushing language that would force snowmobile use to be allowed in ALL
parks - including Yellowstone, Denali and other national parks in Alaska.
The White House is negotiating on the final spending bills this week and
MUST NOT accept this rider. TAKE ACTION! Click on this alert to send your
message to the White House, urging them to reject legislation which allows
for snowmobile use in our national parks.

The amendment being pushed by Senators Craig Thomas (R-WY) and Ted Stevens
(R-AK) unilaterally declares that recreational snowmobiling is a
"legitimate" use of national parks that it "does not adversely affect or
impair park resources and values." This so-called finding contradicts
substantial evidence that snowmobiles do damage parks and destroy the
enjoyment of a trip to the park for many visitors. For example, the
Environmental Protection Agency concluded that the Yellowstone decision to
phase out snowmobiling was the only action that could adequately protect
park resources and public health. EPA called Yellowstone's decision "among
the most thorough and substantial science base that we have ever seen
supporting a NEPA document."

The Stevens/Thomas amendment would REQUIRE the National Park Service to
allow snowmobile noise and pollution in national parks to continue
unchecked. This amendment was written directly by an attorney for the
snowmobile industry in Alaska!

TAKE ACTION! Please contact the White House TODAY and tell them to reject
this attack on national parks. Also, it is critical that Senator Tom Daschle
(D-SD) hears from you. Insist that he stand firm against ANY snowmobile
riders, no matter how "harmless" they may appear on the surface. You can send an electronic letter by going towww.npca.org/take_action/action_alerts/. If you do not have web access, use
the sample letter and contact information below to make your voice heard!
Please - pass this alert on to as many friends as you can. This is our final
chance. The Congressional session will be over soon.
